Something for later

The chapter that sort of caught my eye is “Some thought of interracial dating from someone who is a motherflippin’ pro”. I was particularly struck by the first section, although the rest is also good, on being single and what that’s like.

She holds no punches and gets into the nitty-gritty without giving up her fast-paced humor. In my writing, I am usually a lot more analytical and put a lot less focus on the feelings behind the writing. She brings those right to the surface and confronts them. This may be easier for her as she seems to have a lot of passion for the things she chooses, but I think it would be interesting to push myself to include a little more of my emotions in what I write.

Another thing that she does in this chapter is specifics. She splits up her anecdotes into lists at times and presents a bunch of short, on point stories that fill in or clarify her earlier statements. She uses quotes and screen captures to make points and set the scene. This is just not how I write naturally, so it intrigues me to see how I might be able to get it to work.

The final major item in the chapter was the the topic that brought me in. I am one of two people in my extended family (numbering in total at about 50 cousins and 20 aunts/uncles) who is dating a POC. The other is my older brother. This conversation is honestly helpful to understand my family from the outside looking in and maybe help with my family looking out.

Her humor is pretty consistent in this chapter with how it has been in the previous ones, being rapid-fire pop-culture quips to frame scenarios. She does, as mentioned above, do a bit to delve into the deeper meaning of the title of the chapter and still integrate those with more targeted references about interracial couples in shows and not just dramatic events that happened in pop culture.
